Art students get a surprise visit from local MP
It was an exciting Friday afternoon at Abingdon & Witney College, as we welcomed our MP for Oxford West and Abingdon, Layla Moran, to our Abingdon campus to meet our Art & Design students.
Layla enjoyed admiring the students’ art installations work and hearing their thoughts about their college experiences and their recent trip to Venice, an exciting adventure that influenced much of students’ artwork.
By using the simple yet ingenious method of combining polythene, industrial fans and projectors, they visualised the famous picture-postcard Venetian sights in the College’s large sports hall, including towering cathedrals, canals and bridges, making it an interactive and tactile experience.
It was very much a modern day take on the 18th Century Italian artist Canaletto and his evocative views of the city, such as Regatta on the Grand Canal, and the inspiration was clear to see. Our students were delighted with the surprise visit by Layla, saying it was “exciting” and “special” to have their efforts appreciated and to be able to show off their hard work.
“The afternoon was a fantastic opportunity for Layla Moran to visit the College again, meet some of our talented students and hear about their inspirational trip to Venice. It was a great example of how our students use practical experiences to shape their projects and to teach them a variety of employability skills that will stand them in good stead in their future careers.
Layla is also a strong advocate of further education and the positive impact colleges like ours can have on lives and communities, something which is fundamental to everything we do, so it was the ideal opportunity to show how exciting studying a vocational qualification like Art & Design can be!”
